Structure‐from‐motion photogrammetry demonstrates that fine‐scale seascape heterogeneity is essential in shaping mesophotic fish assemblages

چکیده

Benthic components of tropical mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) are home to diverse fish assemblages, but the effect multiscale spatial benthic characteristics on MCE is not well understood. To investigate influence fine-scale seascape structure and broad-scale environmental fish, we surveyed assemblages in Seychelles at 30, 60 120 m depth using submersible video transects. Spatial pattern metrics from ecology were applied quantify composition, configuration terrain morphology structure-from-motion photogrammetry multibeam echosounder bathymetry explore seascape–fish associations. Hierarchical clustering abundance biomass data identified four distinct separated by geographic location, also significantly influenced variations structure. Results further revealed variable responses assemblage (fish biomass, abundance, trophic group richness, Shannon diversity) heterogeneity different depths. Sites with steep slopes high complexity hosted higher shallower (30–60 m) positively associated aggregated patch mixtures coral, rubble, sediment macroalgae shapes. Deeper (120 relief structural local variability substratum cover. Our study demonstrates potential quantifying delineate fish–habitat Furthermore, incorporating a finer-scale perspective proved valuable explain compositional patterns assemblages. As developments marine surveying monitoring MCEs continue, suggest that future studies remotely sensed can provide insights will both ecologically meaningful operationally relevant conservation strategies.

Primacy of seascape connectivity effects in structuring coral reef fish assemblages

Connectivity has fundamental consequences for the productivity, persistence and management of coral reefs. The area and position of adjacent mangroves and seagrass can affect the demography of reef fish populations and the composition of reefal assemblages. To date, no studies have attempted to partition the influences of these habitats on reef fish assemblages. We used an exploratory seascape ...

Marine reserves and seascape context shape fish assemblages in seagrass ecosystems

Spatial properties of landscapes modify the abundance and diversity of most animal assemblages in ways that need to be understood to plan and implement conservation initiatives, and evaluate their effectiveness. Seascape context (i.e. the spatial arrangement of ecosystems) mediates the effects of reserves on fish abundance, species richness and ecological processes in shallow coral reef and man...

Structure of Mesophotic Reef Fish Assemblages in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands

Mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) support diverse communities of marine organisms with changes in community structure occurring along a depth gradient. In recent years, MCEs have gained attention due to their depths that provide protection from natural and anthropogenic stressors and their relative stability over evolutionary time periods, yet ecological structures of fish assemblages in MCEs ...

Disruption of gammaherpesvirus 68 gene 50 demonstrates that Rta is essential for virus replication.

Gammaherpesvirus pathogenesis is dependent on the ability of these viruses to establish a lifelong latent infection and the ability to reactivate from latency. Immediate-early genes of theses viruses are thought to be critical regulators of lytic replication and reactivation from latency. The gene 50-encoded Rta is the only immediate-early gene product that appears to be conserved among all cha...
